We host seasonal events in locations across the UK where people get together and exchange their produce – bread for mint, mint for cupcakes, cupcakes for jam, jam for apples, apples for eggs. Apples for Eggs was set up by Vicky Swift and Sue Jewitt in 2011, initially as a Facebook page for people to post and swap their excess home produce. Inspired by Brooklyn’s BK Swappers and the LA Food Swap, they then decided to try face-to-face Food Swap events, and held the first Apples for Eggs event in autumn 2011 in Altrincham. Since then, our community has grown as people have decided to set up regular Apples for Eggs events in their towns and cities. We currently have swaps in seven different locations. Apples for Eggs is a social enterprise. Any income generated is used to cover costs where possible and enable our network to continue to grow across the UK.

So, what is a foodswap? A foodswap is a friendly and informal event where you can swap your foraged, homegrown and homemade produce with other locals. It’s a great way of meeting other people who love food, using up gluts and diversifying your larder and meals, it’s also a lot of fun. Examples of swaps, jams, chutneys, pates, cakes, bread, veg, foraged fruit, wild salad, falafel, cordials, granola, eggs, quiche, herbs…the list goes on! You can alternatively swap your time or skills for food. What to expect; 1. Arrive and lay out your delicious food on a table 2. Have time to meet other people and suss out what they’ve brought and what you’d like to swap 3. Make a bid e.g. I’ll swap you my granola for your jam via wee slips of paper 4. Head back to your own table to see if others have bid on your food 5. Make your swaps 6. Chat and share recipes/growing tips etc 7. Head home and enjoy a load of new foody goodies! Calling all growers, bakers, brewers, cooks, foragers and craftspeople! The Trading Post, on the first Saturday of every month, allows ordinary home-producers to get together and exchange their goods. You could arrive with half a dozen jars of jam, and leave with a punnet of tomatoes, a lemon drizzle cake, chutney, a homebrewed beer, some seedlings and some back-garden eggs! All are welcome – bring as much or as little produce as you like. It’s a great way to meet other foodies and home-producers, to try new things, and to swap something you’re good at for something someone else is good at!
